Save the link first, read the whole post only when you allow it
A share stores the link, the public caption and your note. Reading captions, comments or the video is an explicit opt-in on the Mac.
Context
Most tips are in the video, not the caption. But downloading platform content by default is a legal and trust question, and it needs extra tools.
Decision
The share extension saves only what you shared: the link, the platform’s public oEmbed preview (title, creator, cover) and your note. On the Mac, “Read the whole post” is off by default. When you turn it on, yt-dlp reads the post’s own captions and top comments, and downloads the video briefly only when there are no captions or the video is short. Media is processed on your Mac and deleted right away.
Consequences
- With it off, tips from caption-only posts are marked “Not judged yet” rather than scored low (see 0006). A one-tap “Let your Mac watch it” reads a single post on request.
- In our tests captions existed for 18 of 22 posts, so most deep reads never download video.
